The following features and fixes were added in June 2010:

• Improved our automated calls to the IVEC grid.
• Fixed issues related to missing status emails to submitters and "Others to Inform" in our NotificationMailer.

The following improvements and fixes were made in April and May 2010:

• Automated IVEC integration was completed, allowing the sharkGrid to automatically request 120 processors from IVEC when a scan has been submitted to sharkGrid. sharkGrid should see significantly improved performance when comparing patterns.

For those of you loaning computing power to us, the sharkGrid Client has been updated, and old versions will no longer work. The latest version is 1.22. Please download it from:

The following fixes and new features were added in March 2010:

-Added alive/dead status search to Encounter Search

-Delivered another drop of data to the OBIS

-Fixed nicknaming functionality

-Updated Encounter Search to break down results into numbers of: identified and unique, unidentified, and duplicates.

-Finished internationalization of individuals.jsp

-Delivered version 1.22 of the sharkGrid client to match open source changes.

-Added location and location code to the Flash display of spot pattern match results (user request from Zab in Utila)

The following updates were completed in February 2010:

-Further open source migration work (code cleanup and migration) was completed

-Fixed UTF-8 support for encounter submission and servlets

-Replaced the old calendar software and servlet with a new open source version and dramatically improved response time

-Started automated daily backups. The entire catalog is now backed up daily.

-Fixed handling of GPS. GPS value of (0.0,0.0) now allowed.

The following updates were completed in January 2010:

-Further open source migration work (code cleanup and migration) was completed

-Interconnect upgraded to version 1.2 to support loading fgp files saved by I3S 2.0 (requested by user Simon Pierce)

-Redeploy of the Polar Bear Photo-identification Library at http://www.polarbearlibrary.org using the new open source platform

-Upgraded the object-relational layer from JPOX 1.2.3 to DataNucleus 2.0

-Changed database columns to better match their DarwinCore equivalents

-Added the ability for encounters to be recorded with a "Status" of "dead" or "alive" to reflect the first sighting of a dead, previously marked individual (MZ-379).

-Upgraded to TapirLink 0.70

The following updates were completed in December 2009:
-Further open source migration work (code cleanup and migration) was completed
-Cross-site scripting attack prevention was added for the online encounter submission form
-The Excel export feature is now available to users. To prevent data theft, it's limited according to the regional permissions of the user (i.e. filtered by associated location code).
-Upgraded the object-relational layer from JPOX 1.1.9 to JPOX 1.2.3

The following updates were made to the ECOCEAN Library in November 2009:

-a JBoost data export facility was added
-moved servlets out of the root path and into org.ecocean.servlets
-removed unnecessary code out of servlets to better utilize the new ServletUtilities class
-installed Ant and a JPPF server for future sharkGrid development

I believe there was one dead near Manila Bay found recently.  Really unfortunate.

It's amazing how that small one can get so gigantic.
