Since the death of two whale sharks in the nets of Hong Kong fishermen in June 2008, Livingseas Hong Kong has been working on getting there beautiful creatures protected under law in Hong Kong, (http://www.livingseas.hk/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=66&Itemid=127)

I am working towards getting information about whale shark sightings or deaths in the along the coast of China or Taiwan, and wanted to see whether anyone has additional photographs or information for us.

What I have found out so far (you will need to be able to read chinese or alternatively use google translate to get a idea of what the pages are saying):

Two whale shark taken in Fujian Province Sept 07 http://news.xinhuanet.com/society/2007-09/17/content_6737134.htm
Fujian province Sept 2006 http://www.yinxiangcn.com/News/200609/1561.htm
Zheijiang province Sept 2006  http://news.qq.com/a/20060916/000733_1.htm
Guangdong province, giant man eating catfish! http://shanghaiist.com/2007/08/11/amazingly_huge.php
Near Fuzhou City one four metre juvenile http://env.people.com.cn/GB/7652569.html
27 sightings off East Coast of Taiwan during January 2009 http://www1.chinataiwan.org/xwzx/tw/twshhxw/200801/t20080127_579215.htm

I also have reports of sightings in Hong KOng waters and also Pedro Blanco (a small rock in the South China Sea!)

I am lobbying the authorities and one aspect is to prove that whale sharks are out there and are migrating down the coast.  If anyone has additional information regarding this area, please get in touch.

Thanks
David O'Dwyer

 Angry
Just found this morning, disturbing news of another whale shark taken in waters close to Hong Kong.  I have posted up an article online.

http://www.livingseas.hk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=143:whale-shark-caught-ten-miles-from-hong-kong&catid=64:whalesharknews&Itemid=128

I have also found additional reports as follows:
30th Oct 2007    Zhoushan, Zhejiang http://news.sohu.com/20070930/n252447905.shtml
Stranded whale shark, Tai Tung county, Taiwan, 9 July 2007 http://news.sohu.com/20070709/n250969229.shtml
Qiongzhou Strait, Northen Hainan Island 23 May 2006 5. metre shark http://news.sohu.com/20060524/n243376345.shtml
Fujian Market, 22 October 2007 http://news.sohu.com/20071023/n252802852.shtml

All very sad.

Has anyone done or know of any research into whale sharks along the chinese coastline...?  Please do get in touch.
