Hi everyone,

After consulting with many of our users, the ECOCEAN Library will now begin sharing whale shark (Rhincodon typus) occurrence data with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (http://www.gbif.org). The policies and procedures related to this are available at:

http://www.whaleshark.org/wiki/doku.php?id=tapirlink

Contributing data to the ECOCEAN Library will now ensure the data's broader value through integration with higher order biodiversity frameworks, such as the GBIF and FishBase.

Cheers,
Jason Holmberg

Hi everyone,

Just an update on this topic.

In addition to the GBIF, we are now also sharing whale shark sighting data with the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (www.iobis.org). This means that whale shark data is now flowing into the Census of Marine Life as well. We will be making monthly data updates to the OBIS.

GBIF data is updated more slowly (approximately every four months) through a pull via our installed TapirLink provider.

Thanks,
Jason
