According to some locals, whale sharks have been seen laying on the bottom, facing the current, without confirmation.

We have noticed whale sharks resting on the bottom around Seychelles as well, although it is not a regualr occurence and we have not hung around to see how long they stay stationary for. Off Djibouti whale sharks have been observed and photographed to be covered in mud so have definitely been in contact with the bottom although probably not resting.

I'm not sure about the sleeping thing.... PAT tag studies have shown that in many areas they are very active at night spending considerable amounts of time at the surface. Also in Djbouti they have been filmed feeding on the surface at night and coming up to dive boats to feed at plankton aggregated in their lights.... maybe your sharks have a more laid back lifestyle!

Here on Yucatan peninsula, have been sighted at night, feeding, and sat tags demonstrated surface activity as well.
Very interesting to hear about the resting behaviour on some other places, and not necesarily at night!
