Everything about this film is remarkable in the extreme, even the just-right voice of David Attenborough (who, as narrator, doesn't have to put a toe in the water). Here are fantastic happenings in the deep oceans that occupy more than two-thirds of the surface of the planet.
There is seeming peace - it's a false image - in the endless quest to find food. Just now a 30-tonne whale shark, 12-metres long, a creature full of grace, is gently flopping its tail to glide effortlessly towards new feeding grounds. It is February and the shark is making for a spot in the ocean far off the coast of Venezuela where it senses the season is just right for the shoals of plankton, the tiny creatures on which this giant feeds.
Ocean Deep is teeming with life. There are thought to be at least 30,000 volcanic peaks rising out of the ocean floor, some of them exceeding the height of Mt Everest and many attracting creatures of weird shapes, sizes and vivid colours.
The filming represents a magnificent achievement and Attenborough's sense of calm matches that of the whale shark as he steers us through astonishing sights.
